About this work

Introducing “Shakti rides to Dumbo”, Acrylic on 12x16 canvas, part of a new series I’m calling “Tourists”, aimed at capturing locations across the world that have influenced my life.

This painting depicts Shakti, the Hindu God of Strength and Resilience. The backdrop of this painting is inspired by the iconic Washington Street stretch of Dumbo, Brooklyn overlooking the Manhattan Bridge. As a bright eyed and bushy tailed twenty something year old many years ago, I walked these windy streets on many cold days to get to work and attend classes. The juxtaposition of 19th century industrial buildings renovated into loft style studios with Romanesque revival buildings was something I often stopped to take in. As a penniless student, it was also a time when every dollar had to be spent wisely which sometimes meant skipping dinner or opting to walk instead of taking the subway and like many immigrants who’ve built their lives in this country, those early days taught me a thing or two about resilience.
